Who Are We?

We are the University of Hong Kong's International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) 2021 team, led by 23 passionate HKU students. iGEM is an annual international biology competition, where students team up & work together over the summer to create and carry out a project using synthetic biology, aiming to find solutions to current world problems. Projects by iGEM teams engage students in creative thinking and applied technology, and may potentially be published in a paper or launched as a startup/product.

This year, our team is under the supervision of Dr Celia Schunter, Assistant Professor of the HKU School of Biological Sciences. Our project aims to tackle oceanic plastic problems using the symbiosis of a bacteria and a cyanobacteria.
